Shoot 2 Work Record

Work Record

Plans for shoot
In this shoot I plan to go to a football training session and capture the different activities that are involved in a training session.

What I hope to achieve
In my photographs that I take during this shoot I hope to capture my images like a story, show the steps that follow in a training session.

What I have achieved

To capture this photograph I used the aperture priority setting on the camera because I wanted to focus on the amount of light that went into the picture. As you can see from the screenshot of the shot information there was a high aperture of 4.0, this shows that there was a high amount of light that was let into the image. I wanted to increase the amount of light in this image because it was raining and the sky was dark which made the images turn out less brighter than I had hoped. Before shooting for this shoot I experimented with the camera setting to see which one would complement my images well. I achieved the image that I wanted to because I wanted this shoot to tell a story and this image is almost like the beginning of the story. It shows a man, the manager of the team, reading a piece of paper which shows the activities that he is going to be doing during the training session. Although the sky looks grey and dull I think it almost complements this image because the dullness is hovering over his head which gives him some importance as he is the manager of the team. The boys playing football in the background also add effect to this image because it symbolises what is going to happen in the shoot because if we just had the man in the image we wouldn't understand who he was and why he was there. Everything in the background is slightly blurred showing no real depth of field but it does give importance to the man.

To capture this image we can see from the screenshot that I used a higher aperture priority which let in more light. I wanted to let in more light on this picture because I wanted the colours of the clothes he is wearing to be more visible and vibrant. I also used a higher shutter speed when taking this image because unlike the image before the boy is not stationary he was moving around so to be able to capture this image I had to use a higher shutter speed so there wouldn't be a motion blur visible in this image as that wasn't what I wanted. I am happy with what I captured in this image because it adds on to the story I am trying to get across in my shoot. Here we have a boy playing football, following on from the image before because it shows them actually performing the drills that the manager has prepared. In this image the sky also looks grey and dull but because of the settings I have used we are refrained from looking at the dullness as the colour red displayed on his clothes draws our attention away from it. The main focus of this image is the boy and it is clearly shown in this image because he is bright and vibrant which immediately grabs our attention. Everything going on in the background is blurred which shows that there isn't a great deal of depth of field but the blurriness complements the image because it adds significance to the boy and what he is doing.

What am I going to do next
If I was going to carry on with this shoot and photograph more images of these boys playing football I would maybe check the weather before I shoot outside. Although, the weather in this shoot didn't effect it majorly I think the images may have turned out better if there was a brighter sky and atmosphere.

Shoot 2 Final Pieces

Final Pieces

For my second shoot these are all the images from the shoot that I think are my best and work well as final pieces. I like all of these images as I think they tell a story. In the beginning these images show the manager setting up the drills that he is going to do, these throughout the shoot we can see that the boys are then performing the different activities that he has planned them to do. We can also see them discussing and the manger telling the boys what to do at different times. This shoot links to predatory shoots because I photographed a football training session in one os those shoots too. I think this shoot has turned out better because it shows close-up images of the boys playing whereas in my predatory shoots I didn't get close enough. My images also link well with Bruce Davidson's work because he creates a depressing effect throughout his work which is what I was trying to display here in these images.

Shoot 2 Computer Experiments

Computer Experiments

In these computer experiments I decided to take them into Photoshop and edit these images in the camera raw filter. I chose to use the camera raw filter because I like the use of the different settings. In all of the images that I have produced I decided to make them all black and white. I focused on these settings in the filter because I wanted to make them seem depressing and duller than what they actually are. I think that the black and white effect adds a deeper meaning to the image because it gives the impression that it is less happier than what we originally think the images are. Also, I decided to make these image black and white because they look better, although in colour they also looks good too but black and white is more traditional and effective. I wanted to base the work that I am doing on Bruce Davidson's work, although not all of his images are in black and white he has a depressing effect weaved within his work and that is what I was trying to do here. Even though the pictures may seem colourful and fun when you change them to black and white everything changes.

Shoot 2 Physical Experiments

Physical Experiments

In this physical experiment I chose to base it off of the work of Barbara Kruger, I chose to cut out these words and stick them onto the photo. The message behind this image is changed with this caption because without the words it shows a manager controlling his team but when the caption is added it makes him seem as though he wants to be strong and powerful and he wants to make the boys listen to what he is saying. His actions also show how controlling and powerful he is trying to be.

In this physical experiment I decided to tear these two images up and put them back together making sure the rips are visible. I liked the way that these images turned out when I stuck them down on another paper like this. The rips add deeper meaning to the photos, for example it can show that when someone is broken as much as you try and fix them the gaps will never be filled. This is represented in these images because as much as you put these ripped images back together it will still show where they have been ripped/broken.

In this physical experiment I decided to screw this photo up and then unfolded it to reveal a crinkled paper like it is shown. Doing this to the image makes it seem as though the image has texture. It also adds depth to the images meaning because the original image shows the man happy but as soon as you change the way the image is seen ti completely changes the mood. The physical experiment makes us think that this man isn't actually happy because that is what the crinkled paper is showing us.

Shoot 2 Straight Images

Straight Images

n this image we can see a man dressed in football coaching clothes, this makes us think that he is either the manager or the coach of the football team. We can also see that he is looking at a piece of paper, which can show that he is maybe looking at the activities he wants to do with the team.  The fact that there is a boy behind him about to kick a football adds symbolism in this image, there is a coach, a player and a football, the main things that are associated in this image with football are there. In this shoot I wanted to achieve the everyday activities of the football player and the coaches, this is displayed in this image well.

In this image we can see the coach again, he is putting out cones to follow the paper he was looking at before to show the activities he will be doing with the boys. In this image it shows that while the players are warming up the coach has to get the pitches ready to make sure the players know what they are doing. This image also displays a lot of symbolism because it shows the clothing that the coaches have to wear but it also shows the objects needed to perform a successful training session. I think this image helps achieve what I was planning on expressing in this shoot because it shows the activities performed in a football team.

In this image we can see all of the players surrounding the coach, the coach is pointing towards something. His body language and his action show us that he is telling them where to go and what to do. Some of the boys look interested but others don’t which can also show that because they are quite young they play around rather than listen to what they are being told. I think this image has also achieved what I was hoping for too because it shows the different stages of the training session, it isn’t always about the football side of it,  there is a lot of standing around and telling players what to do.

In this image we can see a boy running with a ball, although the main focus of this image is the boy with the ball we can see the other boys in the background and the cones that are set out which the boys are standing next to. From the images before, we can see that this is what the coach was telling the boys to do and why he was setting out the cones. This image also shows symbolism because it involves the players, the coach, cones and a football.

In this image we can see a boy about to kick a ball, there is also another boy behind him watching. By looking at the force he is about to kick the ball with we can tell that he is shooting at the goal. This image also shows symbolism linked to football because we can see a ball and we can see two players. This helps show what I was aiming to express in this image because it shows the steps that occur during a normal training session, they go through smaller activities and then they do more fun things which include shooting.

Shoot 1 Physical Experiments

Physical Experiments

In the physical experiments of these two images I based the work off of Barbara Kruger and produced the images in the way that she did. In the first image with the girl I chose to make it seem as though she is defying her stereotype, she is smiling because she enjoys school and she wants to get an education, this defies the stereotype as girls are sometimes associated with being stupid. I decided to make the second image with the boy seem as though he hates school and he is questioning why he has to have an education. This links with the ideas that Barbara Kruger has because it shows that he thinks he is already smart and powerful. I think these images leave a big effect because it shows more into the feelings of the boy and the girl.

In this physical experiment I decided to rip the photo into 4 sections and stick it back together but with the rips being visible on the page. I think that this produced a good effect on the image because it adds depth of meaning. The rips in the photo can represent the feelings of this person and show how she may feel broken and ripped and although people try to fix someone they cannot put them perfectly back together because this will never work. I chose to add this to my physical experiments as I wanted to use different ways to change a photo, in ways that I haven't done before.

In this physical experiment I decided to screw the photo up and then unscrew it to reveal a crinkled photo. I think this physical experiment is probably my least favourite of the ones that I have produced but I like the way that the crinkles in the paper make it seem as though it has texture to the photo. The crinkles in the paper and the fact that it has been screwed up can add deep meaning to the photo because it reflects her and her feelings towards her life, although she looks happy in the picture she may not be feeling that way inside.
