Final Evaluation

Final Evaluation

Shoot 1
In shoot 1 I chose to base it on the everyday activities of the people I am close to, e.g my family. I chose to use this idea because it linked to my preparatory shoots which showed everyday activities but in a stereotypical way. Although I have used the same people that were in my preparatory shoots I decided to change the stereotypical vibe and use their own activities to make the pictures produced become more personal. My research log has influenced my work significantly because it gave me some ideas on how to compose my images. The research of the different photographers I did has also influenced my work too. Barbara Kruger has influenced my work in the physical experiment section, I used her ideas of changing the meaning of the images and making them seem as if they are liked to feminism or just giving them deeper meanings. Also, my work relates more significantly to Bruce Davidson because I enjoyed his work very much, I tried to incorporate his depressing effect throughout my images the way he did, his work influenced me in the computer experiment section where I made the images I had taken black and white.

Shoot 2
In shoot 2 I chose to base it on the everyday activities of young football players and the manager, this was effective in my work because I showed what different activities they have to go through on a normal training session. In this shoot I wanted to tell a story because I wanted to show the beginning of the training session and what happens throughout the training session. I think I achieved in this aspect because the shoot shows the different activities that the boys take part in. My preparatory shoots link to this shoot because I produced a shoot on football but it didn't turn out as well as I had hoped, this shoot turned out much better. By having the first attempt at this subject turn out not as good as I had hoped helped me improve in this shoot because it gave me ideas on how to improve for example camera angles and camera settings. I didn't feature much about football in my research log but my photographer research as I said in the shoot 1 part did help influence my work. Bruce Davidson influenced my computer experiments and Barbara Kruger helped influence my physical experiments.

From both of these shoots I have learnt a lot along the lines of technicality. I have experimented with my camera a lot during these shoots which has helped me significantly because it influenced the way that I would take the photos. For example, in my shoot 2, when taking pictures of the football it was quite hard to get the right settings to be able to make sure that I wouldn't capture any blurs or any unfocused parts, because I had experimented in preparatory shoots with the camera settings I already knew which camera settings I would have to be using. In most cases I would always use aperture priority when taking these images but for the images that used movement I focused more on the shutter speed so I could refrain from having no blurred images.

In both of these shoots I have presented the pictures in different ways. In the first shoot I have photographed people doing things but I have also photographed still images, this is similar to what I did in the second shoot too. In both shoots I have also created computer and physical experiments which also link to presenting my photos in different ways. In the computer experiments I edited all my images using the camera raw filter and made them all black and white. I also used physical experiments in my shoots to present the images in different ways. For example, I changed the way that photos looked by ripping them, screwing them up and sticking captions onto the images.

By looking at these two shoots I think I was successful at answering the exam paper because I have presented two different ideas that link well with everyday activities. Personally, I think both my shoots are strong because they both include pictures that have deep meanings and they both include pictures that link back to the exam paper and the title of the shoots. Although my shoots are very different, they both link back to the same things. I think I have progressed during this shooting period because in my preparatory shoots some images didn't turn out how I would've wanted them to but in the shoots now I have progressed so that these images all work and have meaning. However, I do feel that I can improve on these shoots by maybe being more prepared to take them. This links back to the weather in my second shoot, I can't change what the weather will be like and luckily it didn't effect my images significantly but I could next time plan ahead and see what the weather would be like the days I plan to shoot.

Shoot 1 Final Pieces

Final Pieces

This shoot that I have created links to my preparatory shoots because in my preparatory shoots I documented the same people by I made the activities they were doing become represented in a stereotypical way whereas in this shoot I have actually documented their activities as a person. The shoots also links to my photographers research as it displays the same effect as Bruce Davidson does.

In all of these images, which I have edited, I put them all into Photoshop and used the camera raw filter to edit these images. I chose to change all my images to black and white. Black and white gives the images a more depressing effect, which I think makes the picture better, black and white makes the picture look better.  I chose to edit them in this way because they correspond well with Bruce Davidson’s work as he documents people’s lives and changes his pictures to black and white too.  In these images I edited them mainly the same by decreasing the saturation completely and then changing the blacks, whites and shadows settings.

Shoot 1 Work Record

Work Record

Plans for shoot
In this shoot I plant to take images related to my family's everyday activities and what they do in their life. This shoot will be linked to my component 2 work where I also documented my family's life but in a stereotypical way rather than actually documenting what they do.

What I plan to achieve
In this shoot I plan to achieve capturing the everyday activities of my family. I want to document my mum making dinner and going to work and document my brother and sisters activities after school.

What I actually achieved

In this image we can see a woman in the car on her way to work as she is clearly in her uniform. I decided to capture this picture in this way because I wanted to show her everyday activities and her journey to work represents this. The background adds detail and effect to the image because it shows that that car is moving. The greenery is slightly out of focus but I think this gives the image a good effect as it shows that the car wasn't stationary. This image doesn't necessarily have depth of field because we cannot see very far into the distance, I didn't initially want this image to have depth of field because I was only capturing what was happening inside the vehicle rather than on the outside. We can tell what the main focus of this image is, it is the woman and the fact that everything else around her is out of focus helps add significance to her. I captured this image with a high aperture because there is a lot of light allowed in this image, it was very dark in the car so I had to change the setting a few times. Also, I used a longer shutter speed to capture the motion blur in the background. This image is what I wanted to achieve because it documents her life well as it shows something she has to do everyday. In the image she looks happy and her mouth is open as if she is singing along to the radio this could show that she is a happy person and doesn’t necessarily hate going to work like the average person.

In this image we can see a girl who looks as if she has just come home from school because she is standing by the front door and she is wearing a school uniform. I wanted to capture this image because it shows what her everyday activities are and the fact that she is coming home from school shows us what she does on a daily bases. I chose to have her looking down at her phone with her headphones in because this also documents a stereotypical life of a teenager in the sense that she isn't paying attention to anything else other than her phone. I used a higher aperture in this image to allow a lot of light into the image because this is a very bright image. I didn't have to use a high shutter speed in this image because she was stationary and she wasn't moving which was easier to capture the image. This photo doesn't show depth of field because we cannot see far into the distance, there isn't supposed to be depth of field in this image because the main focus is right in front of us. I think the composition of this image works well because not only can we see her and what she is doing we can also see a door making it more obvious that she has just come home and showing us what location she is in. The concentration on her face shows us she was intrigued as to what was going on, on her phone. This image is what I wanted to achieve because it shows what her activates consist of when she comes home, playing on her phone as it is highly likely she hasn’t used it all day. Not only does this image document her life but it is also a representation of what every other teenager does when they come home.

What I am going to do next
Although this shoot is a final shoot, if I was going to improve this shoot then I could take the images using setting on the camera that I have thought of rather than playing with the dial each time and picking what one works best.

Shoot 1 Straight Images

Straight Images

In this image we can see a boy dressed as though he has just come home from school, as he is in his school uniform. His face doesn’t look happy which tells us that he maybe doesn’t enjoy school that much or he has had a bad day. His eyes are slightly red which also tells us that he is tired because of how early he has to get up. We can gather from this image that he doesn’t’ enjoy school although he still looks smart unlike some boys who just get home from school.

In this image we can see a woman making dinner, we see in this shoot that shortly after she goes to work. This tells us that before she goes to work she has to make dinner for the people that stay at home otherwise they will not be able to have any. This shows that the woman looks after the family and makes sure that they are alright. We can gather from this image that the wife/mother does act like a housewife figure.

In this image we can see a girl dressed as though she has just come home from school. In this image we can see that she has her earphones in and is looking at her phone showing that she listens to music on her way home. She looks very intrigued by what is happening on her phone which shows us that because she hasn’t been on it all day she needs to see what is going on. We can gather from this picture that she seems as though she has a hard day because her hair is quite messy.

In this picture we can see a woman smiling and rubbing her hands, she is putting hand cream on her hand showing us that her hands are dry. This shows her routine before she goes to work as we can see that she is in her uniform. She looks happy which tells us that maybe she doesn’t mind going to work unlike the majority of people who hate work.

In this image we can see a woman driving to work, we can tell this because she is in her uniform. In the background we can see greenery. The woman looks as though she is enjoying herself as she has her mouth open as if she is singing along to the music. Similar to the image before this shows how this women may not be too fussed about going to work and that she doesn’t mind it unlike the majority of people who hate it.
